RARE 1854 BEN JONSON POETRY ALCHEMY SHAKESPEARE PERIOD Description: Ben Jonson (c. 11 June 1572 6 August 1637) was an English Renaissance dramatist, poet and actor. A contemporary of William Shakespeare, he is best known for his satirical plays, particularly Volpone, The Alchemist, and Bartholomew Fair, which are considered his best, and his lyric poems. A man of vast reading and a seemingly insatiable appetite for controversy, Jonson had an unparalleled breadth of influence on Jacobean and Caroline playwrights and poets.ON AUCTION is a handsome leather 1854 edition, The Works of Ben Jonson, with a Biographical Memoir, published by Phillips, Sampson and Co., Boston, 1854. With 944 pages, a steel engraved frontispiece print, marbled page block matching the marbled boards. Nice quality chocolate brown leather, 5 raised bands on the spine, 10x6 and a half inches. With a personal Victorian bookplate. A solid copy with a handsome binding.
