Born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti. Ordained Priest, 1819. Archbishop of Spoleto, 1827. Bishop of Imola, 1832. Elevated to the College of Cardinals, 1840. 254th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, June 16, 1846. Initially a liberal who made gestures of support to Italian nationalists. Turned reactionary. Forced to flee in disguise to Gaeta, November 24, 1848, to escape mobs. Returned to Rome, April 12, 1850. Gradually lost control of temporal domains and Rome itself on September 20, 1870. Confined himself to the Vatican and considered himself a prisoner. Defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception (December 8, 1854). Convened the first Vatican Council, which defined the doctrine of Papal Infallibility (July 18, 1870). An ultramontanist. Known as "Pio Nono."
