You are bidding on a very beautiful engraved and rare 100% original and authentic 152 Year Old hand colored antique map of the above region from an 1855 JH Colton American Atlas. JH Colton was one of the pre-eminent American map publishers in the mid-19th Century. These atlas are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Complete atlases are currently being sold at prices that can range between $3,500 to $5,000. This is NOT a copy or reproduction and is an original from 1855!! Publisher: Joseph Hutchins Colton was the first of a generation of cartographers and map publishers that would define American cartography in the mid to late 19th century. Colton began publishing maps in the 1830s with the purchase of David H. Burr's map plates. He would later update and modify the plates according to political changes and new discoveries. The Colton empire was taken over by Joseph's sons George Woolworth Colton and Charles B. Colton in the early 1850s. It was George who compiled the seminal two volume 1855 "Atlas of the World", which defined the Colton firm as the preeminent American cartographers of the day. In 1859 Colton sold the plates to this atlas to A. J. Johnson who would continue to produce maps in the Colton mold until the late 19th century. General Description: 1.Interesting and very detailed map. This stunning map is a steel plate lithograph which has been hand colored in wonderfully intense colors. It is noteworthy because of its vivid hand coloration and precise engraving, as well as for its size and detail. Indeed, Colton's maps are among the largest and most colorful 19th century maps ever made. Colton maps are also especially admired for their rugged detail, expressing something of the American Frontier spirit. Political boundaries as well as individual regions/counties and shows towns, roads, railways, rivers, lakes, bays, harbors, islands and other important places. 2. The map is in excellent condition considering the age of the map. The overall size of the map sheet is large at approximately 17 inches by 14 inches. 3. The map is a 100% orignal and genuine antique map. "Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1855" is actually printed on the map and proves the printing year. 4. Full retail value is two to three times my starting price. Map Collecting: Maps are great gifts and perfect decorative additions to any home or office. They are compelling objects that instantly grab people's attention and transport them to a different time and place. Owning an antique map is much like owning a window into the past. An antique map can be a veritable passage back in time, allowing one to imagine the world much as the mapmaker himself did 100, 200 or even 300 years ago! These are great collectibles not only for their decorative and art value but as a financial investment as well. Remember, these are becoming more rare everyday as collectors purchase them, and of course they are not making the atlases any longer, so purchase a map while they are still affordable. All of my maps are investment grade and collectible quality. The value of this original will only increase over time. Many people are now starting to offer cheap reproductions/copies. Why spend the money for something like that when you can have an original for a few dollars more that will only increase in value over time. ** I DO NOT SELL REPRODUCTIONS !!! ** Please also view all of my other maps for sale at very reasonable prices ** Please review all of my positive feeback of satisfied winners from past auctions.
