You are bidding on a very rare 100% authentic 153 year old antique hand colored map of the above region from an 1855 JH Colton American Atlas. JH Colton was one of the pre-eminent American map publishers in the mid-19th Century. Complete atlases are currently being sold at prices that can range between $3,500 to $5,000. This is NOT a copy or reproduction and is an original antique map from 1855!! Publisher: Joseph Hutchins Colton was the first of a generation of cartographers and map publishers that would define American cartography in the mid to late 19th century. Colton began publishing maps in the 1830s with the purchase of David H. Burrâe(tm)s map plates. He would later update and modify the plates according to political changes and new discoveries. The Colton empire was taken over by Josephâe(tm)s sons George Woolworth Colton and Charles B. Colton in the early 1850s. It was George who compiled the seminal two volume 1855 âeoeAtlas of the Worldâe, which defined the Colton firm as the preeminent American cartographers of the day. In 1859 Colton sold the plates to this atlas to A. J. Johnson who would continue to produce maps in the Colton mold until the late 19th century. General Description: The Colton Utah New Mexico is a cornerstone map, exceptionally detailed and showing Fremont's 1844 and 1845 Routes, the Spanish trail from Los Angeles to New Mexico, Kearney's Route, Col. Washington's Expedition, the Cimmarron Route and the location w Capt. Gunnison was ambushed by the Ute Indians. Locates numerous forts, roads, Indian information and the proposed route for the Pacific RR, and a host of early geographical features, including several rarely referenced river sinks and other features in Nevada. At least 5 counties cross the map from California to the Rockies and beyond. 1. This is a stunning and very detailed lithograph map which is hand colored in wonderfully intense colors. Colton maps are noteworthy because of their vivid hand coloration and precise engraving, as well as for their size and detail. Coltonâe(tm)s maps are among the largest and most colorful 19th century maps ever made. Colton maps are also especially admired for their rugged detail, expressing something of the American Frontier spirit. Political boundaries as well as individual regions/counties and shows towns, roads, railways, rivers, lakes, bays, harbors, islands and other important places. 2. The map is in great condition considering the age of the map. The overall size of the map sheet is large at approximately 17 inches by 14 inches. The map is far more beautiful than my pictures show. This map will look wonderful when matted and framed and will be a great addition to your collection. 3. The map is a 100% orignal and genuine antique map. "Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1855" is actually printed on the map and proves the printing year. 4. Full gallery value is many times my asking price. 5. Why am I selling my maps at low prices??? - because for years I have been selling off my entire collection on eBay. If you are looking for something special then please contact me and I may have it. Map Collecting: Maps are great gifts and perfect decorative additions to any home or office. They are compelling objects that instantly grab peopleâe(tm)s attention and transport them to a different time and place. Owning an antique map is much like owning a window into the past. An antique map can be a veritable passage back in time, allowing one to imagine the world much as the mapmaker himself did 100, 200 or even 300 years ago! These are great collectibles not only for their decorative and art value but as a financial investment as well. Remember, these are becoming more rare everyday as collectors purchase them, and of course they are not making the atlases any longer, so purchase a map while they are still affordable. All of my maps are investment grade and collectible quality. The value of this original will only increase...
