You are bidding on a very beautiful engraved and rare 100% original and authentic 152 Year Old hand colored antique map of the above region from an 1855 JH Colton American Atlas. JH Colton was one of the pre-eminent American map publishers in the mid-19th Century. These atlas are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Complete atlases are currently being offered at antiquarian bookstores at prices that can range between $3,500 to $5,000 !!! Publisher: Joseph Hutchins Colton was the first of a generation of cartographers and map publishers that would define American cartography in the mid to late 19th century. Colton began publishing maps in the 1830s with the purchase of David H. Burr's map plates. He would later update and modify the plates according to political changes and new discoveries. The Colton empire was taken over by Joseph's sons George Woolworth Colton and Charles B. Colton in the early 1850s. It was George who compiled the seminal two volume 1855 "Atlas of the World", which defined the Colton firm as the preeminent American cartographers of the day. In 1859 Colton sold the plates to this atlas to A. J. Johnson who would continue to produce maps in the Colton mold until the late 19th century.
