Very interesting 2 pp. letter dated Navy Yard Mare Island (California), 3 Sep 1855, from "William" to his sister, Mrs. Amelia R. Clark, Lyons, Wayne County, New York with original stampless postal cover, Benicia, Cal., Sep 4 postmark + handstamped Paid and 10c postage rate markings. The letter reads, in part, as follows, "My ... health has not been good for 3 or 4 months past. The glands of my neck are very much swollen just above my collar bone. It gives me much pain in my neck and arms. I have been under the Doctor's care for two months or more, but I cannot see that the glands are much reduced. Sometimes I feel very uneasy about my neck. I let it pass without doctoring for some time, thinking it was rheumatism that caused the pain, but at last, on examination, found lumps above my collar bone. Then I went to the doctor. I am taking iodine & iron inwardly & applying an ointment to my neck outwardly. I am about all the while, but my arms & neck are so stiff as to prevent my writing much ... Our works do not progress as fast as they might, because we have to wait for timber from Oregon. We should have the Basin Railway finished in a year from this time. I shall be glad once more to find myself in New York, though if I ever get t I shall probably never make it my home during the winter months. I was the Sulphur Spring above 40 miles for about aweek last month. It is getting to be quite a place of resort for invalids, particularly those suffering from rheumatism. I do not get any benefit from the waters but otherwise felt better when I returned ..."
