This is a very large metal 1855 Japy Freres Gold Figural Shelf Clock. This clock was awarded the G. Med D’Honor – Expo 1855 – Universelle Paris. The movement is stamped on the back, “Japy Freres & Co – G. Med D’Honor – Expo 1855 – Universelle Paris”. There is a large urn on the top decorated with roses and leaves. Detailed circles decorate around the top edge of the urn. Beaded handles curve around to the bottom. A statue of a gentleman sits on a very fancy chair with curved feet. He wears a hat with a feather and has long wavy hair and a mustache. His cape drapes around a jacket with a tie. It has long sleeves with cuffs and a puff at the shoulders. The jacket has a belt and a slightly gathered bottom. He also has a tablet in his right hand. He has on pantaloons that match the pattern of the puffed sleeves. His legs have long stockings and he is wearing strapped shoes. A statue of a lady is seated on a Victorian chair. Her hair is pulled back into a bun with a cluster of curls and a braid down her back. Her dress has flowing sleeves and cuffs at her wrists. There is a cross around her neck. A purse is attached with a rope twist strap which goes around her waist. She has a rose in her hand. Her skirt has a balloon bustle which goes around to the front. The long under skirt gracefully flows to the bottom in folds and she is wearing slippers on her feet. The lower front of the clock is very detailed and ornate. It consists of two tiers which are curved and arranged in off set rows all across the front and sides. Two leafed branches curve toward the center from opposite corners. There is a large oval medallion in the center surrounded by curved leaves and flower buds. The bottom of the medallion has two leaves which are above the flower buds. The bottom design curves out with leaves and slopes down to the front foot. The movement is encased between two hanging leaf and bud designs. The top ornament is a fleur de’ leis design with beads in the center. The dial is pristine porcelain, no chips, scratches, chips or stains. It is the original dial. The hands are the original French ones. The front door of the bezel is hinged. The front feet are set back. The bottoms are square, arching up to a leaf on the corner which supports the clock along with two bars which are curved at the end. Small flowers are below the bars. The end pieces have a large flower on the front. There is a leaf on the top with buds flowing down the center. A garland arches under to the middle and behind it is an etched design. The center below the garland is oblong with a flower in the center. Two leaves in an arched shape fan out to the sides. A large curved foot with a bud design curves to the bottom. The lower back of the clock is metal with a design pattern stamped on it. The case housing the movement has a glass back which is hinged for access. The bell, which is visible, chimes full on the hour and a single chime on the half hour. The original pendulum rod can be seen from the back. The movement is a Japy Freres. It is the original movement. The back is stamped, ”Japy Freres & Co – G. Med D’Honor – Expo 1855 – Universelle Paris”. It has been adjusted and oiled and keeps perfect time. This movement is complete and the springs are good. The new key is also included with this clock. The clock and movement are completely original. The finish has been restored to the original gold. The clock and movement are in pristine condition. All of the very fine details have been preserved in the metal. There are very fine details in the fabric in the clothing showing the actual weave. The crisscross designs on the top of the base are still perfectly visible. (See details in the pictures.)
