If you'd like to see some of the others, please click on "view seller's other auctions" (which you will find at the top of this page). * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ANTEBELLUM SOUTH CAROLINA ACTS OF THE - 1855 - LAWS CONCERNING SLAVERY, This is a fantastic piece of historical memorabilia from South Carolina, a document titled " Acts of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina " for the year 1855. This was printed in Columbia, South Carolina by E. H. Britton & Co., State Printer, in 1855, just five years before South Carolina would secede from the Union! The first Act passed in 1855 was an act setting forth taxes on property, including a tax of 75 cents each for all slaves and two dollars for each "Free Negro, Mulatto and Mustizoe" Another act passed related to a town council being given the power to punish slaves and free persons of color any way they wanted as long as they didn't kill or maim them! T were also acts passed to prohibit kidnapping seamen, or to harbor seamen who deserted from their ships! Other acts involved fire companies and militia units. In all, 38 acts were passed by the South Carolina legislature in 1855, and this document, over 100 pages in length, includes a complete 12-page index and a copy of the state constitution. Among these various acts, in addition to those relating to slavery and Indians, were those relating to various railroads: the Edgefield Railroad the King's Mountain Railroad the North-Eastern Railroad the Savannah River Railroad the Spartanburg and Union Railroad and several Ferry companies In addition, various acts dealt with matters concerning certain cities, towns and villages: Charleston Columbia Hamburg Belton Bamberg Williamston Anderson Walhalla Conwayboro Spartanburg Lancaster Unionville York This very old and very historic legislative document from South Carolina is a piece of "Old South" history, legislation reflecting the old order of the antebellum period, enacted just one decade before all that would be changed forever! This document contains two appendices, one a two-page listing of "The Acts for 1855," and the other an alphabetical 12-page "Index to the Acts of 1855." The pages in this document are not numbered starting with "1" but, as indicated on the cover of this document, starting with the legislative session of 1839, the Annual Acts of the General Assembly were all to have their page numbers in sequential order from that point on. This historic item is an ORIGINAL - IT IS GENUINE, NOT A REPRINT OR "REPRO" OF ANY SORT! It was printed 153 years ago and is guaranteed to be authentic, and not a later reproduction! The "ex libris" notice on the reverse side of the front page indicates that this antebellum document was once part of the collection of the South Carolina Library. T is a little discoloration on the front page and moderate foxing on some pages, but all of the pages are absolutely easy to read, the print clear and distinct. The pages are a little loose at the spine, but this antebellum document is whole and absolutely complete. Aside from these minor imperfections, this old legislative document is in very good shape - t are no missing pages, major tears, holes, etc. ---- PAYMENT AND SHIPPING Payment may be made by PayPal, by money order or by personal check, but I reserve the right - depending upon a buyer's eBay "feedback" - to delay shipping while a check clears, which can take quite a while in my area.
