This wonderful 1856 oil on canvas American School portrait depicts a young boy seated on a log and holding his cap, before a landscape of mountains and lake. The painting is signed and dated lower right "Painted by I. H. Keeley 1856". Keeley was quite a skilled portraitist. This painting is large, in excellent condition (looks good under a black light) and displays a lot of charm. Keeley, also known as Isaac H. Keeley, was born in 1817 in Haverhill, MA and died in 1891. He painted actively between 1843 and 1861 in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The Lexington (MA) Historical Society has three of his striking paintings, which are included in Dean T. Lahikainen's catalogue of the exhibit "Lexington Portraits: A Catalogue of American Portraits at the Lexington Historical Society 1734-1884. Dimensions are 35.75 inches high x 28.5 inches, canvas size, and 39 x 32 inches framed.
