This is an original classic Civil War model 1860 cavalry saber with a very scarce manufacture date. In good condition. This is the pattern so often carried by soldiers of the Civil War. This one has the original blade with a nice dark looking tone all over. The sword blade has the straight line maker’s mark of the Ames Manufacturing Company in Chicopee, Massachusetts at the base. On the front of the blade it has the scarce production date of 1858 to go along with the U.S. stamp and the inspector initials of "J.H.” These are the initials of Joseph Hannis who inspected weapons for the U.S. Ordnance Department. In Thillmann’s sword book, he states that there were only 1,800 purchased by the government in 1858. This is one of the toughest production dates for an Ames sword that you will encounter. The brass guard and pommel cap have a wonderful dark copper tone to the brass. On the top of the pommel cap you can still see the remnants of the "JH” inspector initials of Joseph Hannis and "W.A.T.” for William A. Thornton. It also has a visible rack number of "8." This is a very attractive Civil War cavalry saber with a clear and rare pre-Civil War production date. Nice, original leather wrap, scabbard has a small dent in it. The basket is twisted most likely due to a horse fall. The blade has an area about 8 inches long with nicking in it. read more
