1858 INDIAN HEAD CENT Copper-Nickel PROOF, MINT PATTERN
This is a very lovely and stunningly rare, Proof 1858 Indian Head Cent. As you may know, the mint was striking and issuing Flying Eagle Cents in 1858, the United States did not issue Indian Head Cents until 1859. This is one of the very few Pattern or Trial Pieces struck by the United States Mint in 1858 to test out the proposed new designs for the coming coins. The obverse of this piece has the design adopted in 1860 with the broad or rounded point and the reverse has an Oak Wreath with Ornamental Shield that was never adopted. Weight: 4.72 Gram, 19 Millimeter, Copper-Nickel, .880 Copper .120 Nickel. The edge is plain and very thick, a full 2 Millimeters. Estimated Mintage: 100-125 Pieces. United States Pattern, Experimental and Trial Pieces by J. Hewitt Judd # 212. Obverse: 1858 Reverse: Oak Wreath and Ornamental Shield. The Coin: A beautiful example, and just about sure to get a Wow! out of any collector. It would sure look good with a high grade set of Indians, perhaps in that pesky 1856 hole. Totally original, and guaranteed genuine, never cleaned or played with, a very, very nice piece overall. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself. I ship the day after cleared payment. Payment in US funds only please. Returns: Accepted, in original condition, in most cases and encouraged if the item has been misdescribed.
