1858 Sketch of the Country between South Pass & the Great Salt Lake BW lithograph folding map from Senate Ex Doc No.11,and Ho. Ex. Doc. No1, 1st session, 35th Congressâe(tm) 21.5 x 17.5 inches (53 x 45 cm ). Lithography by G.B. Graham, Washington D.C. Wheat in "Mapping the Trans-Mississippi West" first attributed this map to Stansbury with an 1850 dating (Capt M Howard Stansbury, Corps of Topographic Engineers) but later decided it was 1858 and US Gov (see Wheat 958 with full page reproduction). This example in VG condition with one vertical fold slightly aged toned and reinforced verso as well as couple of intersection tears, no paper loss. That said, the paper is in nice condition for a government issue map. Note: the first two images are photos aand are too dark and the last two are scans and a bit light. Sigh ! South Pass was the famous gateway through he central Rockies, en route the Great Salt Lake. Marked on the maps are lines showing the practicable routes for wagons as well as the routes of earlier explorers. South Pass was first seen by white men in1812, but remained largely unknown until disclosed to Jedidah Smith by the Crow Indians. By the mid-1830's it had become the principle route from immigration west. Also excellent detail along the Mormon settlements east and south of the Great Salt Lake. An important cartographic
