DESCRIPTION: Two hand written journals by Lucius C. Smith of Ohio covering a span from January 1, 1859 - December 31, 1859, and the other diary is from November 17, 1861 - December 31, 1862. Fascinating account of his life, deaths, illness, family, friends and work and daily life in Ohio during Civil War times. Lucius was a school teacher for a year or so, and then proceeded to work on his home and land. We believe he did this with his two brothers, John and Newton, and his Father, of whom he mentioned everyday. There were many mentions of Augustine who was very ill and crazy. Together the brothers cut lumber, split rails, and hauled logs and lumber many times, and to many places. In one entry, he mentions 16 hundred boards were shaved, and talks about clapboard bolts. They worked the land planting crops, and built a cane house, and made 4402 gallons of molasses to sell. The fathers name is unknown, but we had books from the same estate which were older, and were inscribed A. Smith. The father was a surveyor and went out on many jobs, but also worked with his boys. We are uncertain as to which town they lived in, but believe they were close to Albany as they made many, many trips there, sometimes the mail, and for evening meetings. They also made many trips to Columbus, and also visited Johnstown, Jerseytown, Delaware, Gahanna, Blacklick, Worthington, Westerville, Bud-Town, and Reeses grist mill. There are about 35 mentions of the Civil War with details and specific accounts of battles, soldiers and the commanders. They saw 700 ragged prisoners of Ft. Donaldson marching to camp Chase with Col. Moody commanding. He writes about how the war has brought hard times, how friends and family are enlisting and have died, and how many are afraid of the draft. Lucius even put his property in his fathers name in case he was drafted to war. There are many Smith names mentioned throughout and they include: Aunt Peggy Smith who died Nov. 19, 1862, Hiram Smith, George Smith, Samuel Smith, James Smith, Charles W. Smith, Mary Smith, Israel Smith, Isaac Smith, Aunt Hariet & Uncle Henry Smith, Dan Smith, Aunt Eliza, Obidiah Smith, Abram P. Smith, and James Smith. Some of the many friends and acquaintances were: George Goodrich a lawyer, Homer and Rhoda Wells, Dennis Strait, E. D. Fink, Annie, Sallie, Samuel, Sophia, and Reese Eavens (Evans?), Andrew and Gilbert Collins, Goodrich, Celinda and Joseph Grovenberg, Emma, Anthony, Rube, George and John Miller, John, Adam and Jacob Bear, Samuel Needles, and many more. The names and places mentioned may be misspelled, as Lucius, although a teacher, was a very poor speller. This is a good read and very insightful into how difficult life was in general, with interesting accounts of the Civil War, and a wonderful piece of family history or genealogy for the Smith ancestors.
