4 pp 7 1/2 x 9 5/8" flyer for DeWitt, West & Co, general mercantilers in Lowville. This dated 16, November, 1859. 1st p is discussion of the state of business & the economy-generally prices are up etc. All sounds familiar. But they are holding the line. 2nd p lists lots of the stuff they carry & says they want to but "Pork in the Hog" & prime mink skins. This has been folded to fit small envelope. Back has some purchases written in pencil. Accompanied by 7 3/8 x 11 7/8" sheet with hand written poem (I use the term loosely.) Apparently written about a competitor John O'Donnell or so says a note on the poem. In part "Oh John! your wrath we think is out of place,/ Could you not stand a joke with better grace?/ Declining business like rheumatic gout,/ Disturbs the temper of a man no doubt,/ Your trade is small we hear, and patrons few,/ Then sell the old goods off and purchase new." etc etc. Rather interesting pair. The poem has wrinkled edges, fold lines & soil on back.
