I put both of these diaries together because they were both from the 1860’s and because the last one I describe only has a few entries; not enough to sell on it’s own but I didn’t want it to go to waste. So, the only thing these two diaries have in common is the 1860’s. This first diary is written by a “love sick” young woman by the name of Kate Tubbs who is from Oneida County New York. I’m not sure which town but she mentions Oneida, Canastota, Glen Falls, Sandy Hill and Durhamville as places in which she travels. I assume she lives close to Oneida Lake because she mentions “crossing the lake” quite a bit. The diary represents the year 1867 and although not completely full of handwritten entries, there are only 45 blank days. So it’s over ¾ full of handwriting. The diary was given to Kate by Newton B. Randall (as signed on the first page) and at first I could tell how very fond of him she was but as the diary progresses something happens which tears them apart. Her father is newly married too, as April 6 th is his 1 year wedding anniversary and on August 11 th Kate turns 19. Kate’s writing is small and sometimes a bit hard to read because it’s a little light in places. I use a lighted magnifying lamp to read these diaries whose writing is a bit faded and things show up perfectly but I didn’t really have to use it with this one. read more
