Historic original CDV (carte-de-visite) photograph of an early Knights Templar member in Castile, New York posed in full regalia in the late 19th century.This is a vintage matte albumen photo mounted on a 4 1/4" x 2 1/2" CDV (carte de visite) mat. The photographer's imprint on the reverse side identifies the location as Castile, New York and the photographer as Geo. L. Washburn . CDV photography began in 1854, although the peak years for carte de visite photography were 1859-1866. According to Collector's Guide to Early Photographs by O. Henry Mace, corners of CDV card mounts were typically rounded after 1871; this particular mount displays the earlier square cornered mount, which most likely dates this photo to the 1860s.
