This is an 1860 Colt Army engraved presentation revolver with carved ivory grips. The Colt 1860 Army was the main sidearm of the Union Army during the Civil War and was a six shot .44 caliber weapon. The gun has an inscription on the back strap that says "presented to Major F. R. Whitney 41st Ind. Vol. Inf. Dec.14.1863". The gun has beautiful deep engraving and was probably done at the factory although it may have been done ouside the factory by a jeweler. The grips are hand carved ivory with a Mexican eagle relief. This grips must have been addded at a later date as I can't imagine an American Union Officer during the Civil War getting a presentation handgun with Mexican grips. They are lovely none the less. The gun was manufactured sometime in 1863 as is evidenced by the serial number in the 54,000 range, and the inscription date of course. The cylinder is an original spare as the serial number on the cylinder is not the same as the number on the frame. The gun is in good working order and has a grey patina with traces of silver plating on the brass triggerguard. Please see the other similar items that I have up for auction.
