Ennis, Formerly of New York. Baltimore: Printed by Sherwood & Co. N. W. Cor. Baltimore and Gay Sts. 1860. Original bluish green paper wrappers. 7 1/4 by 4 1/2 inches. 61 pages. Covers soiled, with a chip missing at the bottom front corner. Small chips missing at top and bottom of spine. Some foxing and spotting, especially to the first few pages. No ownership or other markings. Text block tight and covers well attached. Please see the photographs, which can be enlarged and are part of the description. Quite scarce. Could only find a few copies on OCLC/WorldCat. From the text, you can read that Ennis had spent the last six years as an itinerant dentist in North Carolina. After John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, anyone from the north was treated with suspicion, including Ennis. On one occasion, in Virginia, he was forced to sell his buggy and instruments for half their value in order to be released. This booklet gives his defense of slavery, mainly from a religious viewpoint. Perhaps he hoped to distribute it when he tried to re-enter the south, thus diminishing animosity toward him.
