Antique Maine Shaker handmade and constructed of split wood splints that have been cut, bent and woven to form a small rectangular & handled sewing basket of exceptionally fine & precise construction retaining it's original old dry surface, as found . Up attic and put t long ago we found this fine and pleasing old Shaker sewing basket. So fine, so delicate and so painstakingly constructed, it's Shaker maker source was obvious to all of us when discovered. "Too good to use" was a possible back then but a probable today. It is a gem. So, so, SO finely cut and fitted, the whole basket defines precious. One could use this but the terror of damaging it would be constant. It is best to carry on the tradition of this Maine farm. This one saw minimal if any usage in the home; it is just too treasured to be safe to use. Details include the neurosis of perfections in the construction of the rim, the handle, the tiny thin side splits, the bottom weave w all are masterfully whittled to fitted perfection. This neurosis continues to a sense of perfection of the whole basket; a... the fineness of the fine...; a... the perfect of the perfection... of the whole basket. This is a beautifully and carefully made production and was probably a single special effort to be given as a gift. All aspects convey that this was a special basket from it's inception. To our eye, the extra fine fitted crafting and the special wrapped top edge set this one well above the average sewing basket. It's a great one we won't find again so don't miss out. Very good as found condition. The basket has old damage with loss at three of the corners in the thin side splits. This damage is not detracting and not easily noticed. T is also damage with loss to the single bottom rim edge thin splint. Again this is not detracting and may barely be noticed. All damage is due to age and the overt fineness of the broken splints. Otherwise the basket is in perfect condition. This is wonderfully formed early Shaker sewing basket. Right out of the attic, it has appropriate surface oxidation, wear and very minor soiling for it's age and from it's old farm residence. Please see photographs. As found last August in an attic of an estate in Montville , Maine . Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listings from this estate. This was in the attic. We have done nothing to it at all; it is just as we found it. It looks like good one to us! We offer this fine early Shaker sewing basket for $4.99 NR.
