Antique handmade copper handled dry measure resembling a large cup and retaining it's original old dry surface, as found. Maine , 1860's, possibly earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1 1/2 lbs. 6 1/2"tall by 6 1/4" bottom diameter. Sheet copper that has been cut, bent and soldered to form a large handled dry measure resembling a large cup and retaining it's original old, oxidized, darkened and dry surface, as found. This was in the barn; in by the stalls. It was used to distribute grain to the animals. That explains why the measure is the way it is. This saw barn service from the Civil War to the 1890's when "modern" appliances displaced the traditional horse and cow. "MILK" and "AUTOMOBILE" are the modern appliances. Handmade from heavy & thick sheet copper this measure is not a very fine production. The craft skill is weak with thick solder joints and an over size bottom that... make us suspicious this was once a finer form but due to farm usage has (1) had it's handle poorly reattached and (2) a farm made bottom replacing an earlier bottom. The tinned interior, the careful top rim finish of copper folded over a wire and the fine side seam are much superior to the bowed and heavy handed soldered bottom.
