This elaborate estate found oval, footed center bowl/compote is made by Rogers, Smith & Co. of New Haven Connecticut, before their merger with Meridan Britannia Co. in 1865. The silver plated holder is SO UNUSUAL. It has wonderful open scroll work design around the oval top perimeter and two open work, fancy handles. The four curved legs end in a hoof type foot AND t is a charming retriever or spaniel dog (with it's right front leg raised) on the lower oval platform. Under the lower platform is the raised, round Rogers, Smith & Co. logo. T is a "No 43" within the center of the circle. The upper dimension is 11-1/4" from outside handle to outside handle. The width at the center is 6-5/8" and this stands 5" high. Approximately 10-15% of the plating has lost it's "sheen", but it still has a wonderful patina and shine. The dog, which is 2-1/8" long, has very nice detailing. The original crystal liner is frosted cut to clear with circle and diamond designs and a nice star burst center. T are "flea bite" nicks around the top edge of the liner. They look like they were ground, but they could use a little more to smooth them out. It doesn't bother me aesthetically, as this shows use and is age appropriate. The liner measures 8-3/8" long, 6-1/2" wide and 1-5/16" deep. This piece is an attention getter and an unusual find.
