Antique handmade & hand carved ( from one piece of pine wood) book shaped spruce gum box with it's original chip carved & gold paint decorated surface, original top and bottom slides and retaining it's original old dry surface, as found . Maine , 1880-1890's. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight ½ lbs. 5 7/8" tall, 3 7/8" wide, 2 3/16" thick. Antique handmade & hand carved (from one piece of pine wood) book shaped spruce gum box with it's original chip carved & gold paint decorated surface, original top and bottom slides and retaining it's original old dry surface, as found. Very attractive, pleasingly old and authentic Maine spruce gum box . In the winter at logging camps, loggers carved these distinctive boxes, usually in the shape of a book, and filled them with the forest's treasured spruce gum to give to family or a loved one as a gift in the spring. Long appreciated as a novelty of the Maine woods, lovingly preserved by the recipients, spruce gum boxes are now recognized as authentic and singular Maine folk art along with the other forest folk arts that includes crocked knives and birch bark constructions. This is a classic old box in great condition with it's original gold paint highlighting selective chip carving on the front and rear as well as once fully covering the page edge ends. The old surface, resplendent with it's traditional chip carving and the traditional classic book form, larger size and having the original end slides present all combine to make this a fine specimen of a spruce gum box. Very good as found condition. Aside from normal, appropriate and desirable surface wear, wear to the gold paint, age toning, light soiling, light surface oxidation and edge bumping, the spruce gum box is in perfect condition. Both the original top and bottom slides are present but only the top one slides. The bottom slide is fixed in place and does not slide . The top one slides easily. Right out of the attic, the spruce gum box has appropriate surface oxidation, wear and soiling for it's age and from it's old Maine farm residence. Please see photographs. As found last August in the attic of an estate in Montville , Maine . Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listing from this estate. This was in the attic. We have done nothing to this at all; it is just as we found it. It looks like a good one to us! We offer this classic old Maine spruce gum box for $4.99 NR.
