Very rare original boxed example of 5 German hand-made complex ribbon core swirl marbles made in the c. 1860's. The marbles vary in size from just under 13/16" to 15/16", and are all based on a design of a ribbon core surrounded by ribbons, 2 have either surrounding threads or groups of 3 threads alternating with the outer ribbons. Each of 4 marbles has one level of ribbons colored blue/red/blue or blue/pink/blue, the 5th marble has one level of pink/blue/pink ribbons; the colors in the other level of the marbles varies, but green, pink and red predominate. The marbles measure (7th photo) from L to R 13/16"-, 13/16"+(2), 7/8", and 15/16". All have similar twisted and smoothed bottom pontils, and ground and faceted top pontils. All of the marbles are in mint condition with no more than minute as-mades and a few contact marks, mint 9.5. The coffin box is in mint- condition with a blank label at the head, measuring a little over 4-3/4" in length by a little over 1-1/4" at the head end (c. 122x35mm).This is the last of the four coffin boxes I purchased in '87 in East Berlin, the dealer could not provide any information on the boxes, but they are similar to the empty coffin boxes found in the Mueller Warehouses years ago after the wall fell. This type of box was used for selling marbles retail and wholesale as well as for samples, I would read more
