Antique handmade sheet iron tin that has been cut, bent and soldered to form a small hand churn or mixer for foaming cream to make sillabub retaining it's original old oxidized , darkened and dry surface, as found. Maine , 1860's. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1 lbs. 10" long with the handle down by 3 3/8" diameter. Antique handmade sheet iron tin that has been cut, bent and soldered to form a small hand churn or mixer for foaming cream to make sillabub retaining it's original old oxidized, darkened and dry surface, as found. What is this? It's a small hand type churn that was used to FOAM a mixture of cream, wine and sugar to make a beverage... w only the FOAM was, well, drunk. The foam created by the whipping was "taken off the top" and served with grated nutmeg. ONCE this was a very popular beverage. Now it is lost? Higher authority than us details this device and the sillabub. Mary Earle Gould's ANTIQUE TIN & TOLE WARE book pictures a similar "whipper" in plate 93. Eric Sloane/THE SEASONS OF AMERICA PAST and Eric Brown/EARLY AMERICAN BEVERAGES both record the sillabub recipes and the foam. BUT it is we who found and offer this scarce truly American tin beverage maker. "Yikes" we say but note two features. First the construction and quality of the whipper is superb. It could absolutely beat, whip, wop, and FOAM that mixture inclusive of the very solid BRASS ring support for the whip rod at the top. Secondly the whipper is in excellent original condition and that suggests to us it was not used very much. Why? Because it would only make one serving at a time and we bet full that when someone started to make themselves a sillabub, everyone else wanted one too so... a bigger vessel was used to whip. None the less this... odd, scarce, classic, well made and attractive early American ...cocktail shaker... right out of the summer kitchen, w, when thought over... one WOULD ACTUALLY LIKE to drink a "foam" of whipped wine, cream & sugar on a... Maine summer evening... on the back porch. Very good as found condition. Aside from normal age toning & oxidation, the sillabub whipper is in perfect original condition . Right out of the summer kitchen, it has appropriate surface oxidation, wear and very minor soiling for it's age and from it's old farm residence. Please see photographs. As found last month in an estate in Black Point , Maine . For those who have been following these listings we begin the listings from this estate. We will be listing from it for the next few months. This estate will take longer to list for t was a lot in it. Thank you for your continued interest. Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listings from this estate. We found this neatly stored in the summer kitchen. We have done nothing to it at all; it is just as we found it. It look like good one to us! We offer this attractive & scarce sillabub whipper for $4.99 NR.
