Includes the applicant's letter of introduction, and the medical test with answers given by the applicant. Total of 3 pages, in ink. The letter of introduction reads: Naval Hospital, New York, July 1, 1861. Gentleman: I was born in Rhinebeck, New York, May 20, 1838, educated at Rhinebeck and graduated at Casleton Medical College in the fall of 1858. My instructor's name is E. Platt and L. Nelson. They reside at the village of Rhinebeck. I was occupied three years in the study of medicine and my opportunities for studying the nature of drugs, my preceptor's having a large drug store accessible to me at all times, was good. I have practiced medicine and surgery for one year steady in the village of ? and in the meantime in Rhinebeck I have studied natural History some, have had a classical education, my knowledge of other languages is small, that is of the modern languages. My Post Office address is 88 Wall St., N.Y. care of N. Latson. I remain yours &c, J.R. Latson. Latson was asked 8 medical questions on his test. This lot includes the questions as well as his detailed answers. Some of the questions were: What is the structure of the knee joint? To what affections are the salivary glands liable? Describe the composition mode of preparation and medical uses of Chloroform. Give the effects of inflamation on the different membranes. What are the symptoms of inflamation of the Liver & its terminations? Describe the mechanism of labor. Light wear and age toning. The 3rd page has a piece of the paper cut out at the upper left corner which does not affect any of the content. Extremely interesting Civil War medical related documents!

Doctor John R. Latson was appointed Assistant Surgeon, U.S. Navy, on Nov. 3, 1864, and served on the U.S.S. Massasoit.
