Includes the applicant's letter of introduction, the medical test with answers given by the applicant and his certificate of physical capacity. Total of 7 pages, in ink. The letter of introduction reads: I was born in Pembroke, Genesee County, New York, Sept. 4, 1836. I attended about two years at the Wilson Coll. Institute, Wilson, N.Y. and about nine years at the Military Collegiate Institute, at Pembroke, New Hampshire. I attended four courses of lecture at the Albany Medical College, and graduated there, and afterwards attended a course at the University of Penn. and took a diploma from that College. I commenced the study of medicine wirh Dr. E. Parmelee of Lockport, N.Y., remaining with him something more than a year, and afterwards studied with Dr. Alden March of Albany, N.Y. about two years. This, with the time spent at Philadelphia, would make my time of study near four years. In my preceptor's office, the Niagra Co. Almshouse, and in a fair practice of medicine for more than three years, I have had some opportunity for aquiring a knowledge of pharmacy and the physical properties of drugs. In the office of my preceptor Dr. March, in the hospitals of Albany, and of Philadelphia, and in my own practice, I have had opportunities of witnessing the practice of medicine and surgery, and I have myself amputated the arm at the shoulder joint, and performed other operations of a less magnitude. I have some knowledge of natural history, have read some Latin, and have some knowledge of the French language. My present Post Office address is South Byron, Genesee County, New York. J. Russell Little. U.S. Naval Hospital, June 6th, 1861. Little was asked 8 medical questions on his test. This lot includes the questions as well as his detailed answers. Some of the questions were: What is the structure of the knee joint? How is the operation of castration performed? State the uses in medicine of the salts of potash. What are the distinctive symptoms of leisons of the substance of the brain and its membranes? What are the junctions of the tongue? Also includes his certificate of physical capacity which is dated at Brooklyn, June 6, 1861. Light wear and age toning. Extremely interesting Civil War medical related documents!

Doctor Jeremiah Russell Little was appointed Assistant Surgeon, U.S. Navy, on July 10, 1861, and served on the U.S.S. Connecticut during the Civil War. He resigned on July 30, 1864.
