This vintage autograph album belonged to:

Stephen Winstead from

Princeton Dallas Co. Ark

He was born Dec. 6th 1842.

He was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity

I contacted the Curator of Archives for Phi Gamma Delta and

below you will see the letter he sent me and a website

for more information about some of the students listed in

this book. Many would put their fraternity at top

of page, name, date of birth, future profession,

what society they belonged to, what class, who

they were dating and then a short comment.

T were some that listed their profession as

soldier and one young man was killed during

the war and this was written later in pencil by

the owner of this book.

Very nice piece of history!

The 1924 Alumni History of the University of North Carolina says that Robert Gilliam Russell was a student in 1860 and 1861. He was in the class of 1864 but withdrew before graduating to serve in the Confederate army. The same goes for Winstead. After leaving Chapel Hill in 1861 he became a captain in the 18 th Arkansas Infantry. He was from Princeton Arkansas, born 12/6/42 and died 8/14/74.

Just as high school students have classmates sign their yearbooks, so to did young men at college sometimes keep autograph albums. Around the same time photo albums became popular, filled with portrait photographs of friends and classmates, and often signed on the bottom or the back with name, class, and some shared affiliation such as fraternity or literary society. You might see some mention of the Philanthropic Society or Dialectic Society.

If you find other mentions of Phi Gamma Delta, Iâe(tm)d be interested in knowing more about them. Other Phi Gams of the time that we know of include John Monroe Johnson, Berry Pippen Clifton, Augustus Perry Young, Angus Shaw, James Lucas, Robert Joyner, James Moore, Thomas Jefferson Hadley, James Madison Covington, John Atkins Cameron. Some biographical information about each of them (including Russell) is :
