excellent account of time spent in the Rocky mountains, written in 1861 by James Ross, to his brother Thomas. We're in our fine cabin enjoying bachelors life to its utmost extent being situated about 12000 feet above the level of the sea..... you can gaze upon the lofty peaks pikes peak they appear as though the very clouds hung around them with their snowy tops the year around.....I have got a claim. moved into a cabin got things thrown up in a pile. now all I need is a housekeeper. they are very scarce in this country but I have seen coming into French Gulch the other day-one was a squaw, the other a negro, the other a white girl, but I don't like the stock. I think the white girl was in bad company..be kind (to) ladies-do not know the true value of them until we are separated from them...t was a man murdered last week but the villian that done the deed made his escape..several men killed by pits caveing in...the road to California is blockaded by the mormans-(Mormons) and all further emmigration is stopped for the present...t is a great deal of sickness in the mountains-scurvey and mountain fever. excellent letter about life in the rocky mountains in 1861. The letter has toning at the edges, and paper loss, which affects some letters, but the letter is readable, except for a few letters.Postage is $1.50 in the US-$3.00 elsew- 7 day refund.
