1861 Seated Liberty Quarter

Love Token

This 1861 Seated Liberty Quarter was probably a pin at one time gauging by the marks on the seated liberty side of this coin. The date is still very clear. The initials S.J.M. are on the front of this token and there is a light scroll around the lettering. There is also a small border engraved around the edge. If you think about the era this was done, one might imagine a soldier going off to war and giving this as a gift to his wife, girlfriend or even his mother. Love tokens were also used during times of bereavement so it may have been for a soldier who lost his life in the war! Such history this must have!
