1861 O Shipwreck SS Republic Half Case COA Book & CD This auction is for a 1861 O SS Republic Shipwreck Effect Liberty Seated Half Dollar! This is a truly unique set with a lot of history behind it. The coin itself has been put in a slab and is authentic from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation , serial number 1793241-227. The coin is a 'Shipwreck Effect' because it and about $400,000 worth of gold and silver coins sunk with the SS Republic off the coast of Georgia on October 25, 1865. It was found 12 years later by the Odyssey Marine Exploration of Tampa, Florida. The coins were retrieved by a ROV and brought up one by one. It comes in the original ornate wooden box with a silvertone SS Republic ship on the front. The box has little scratching and is made of a gorgeous dark wood. Inside is the coin in the slab, the Certificate of Authenticity , and a small booklet. The booklet contains 7 pages with the story of the shipwreck, the find, and many pictures and diagrams. It also has a DVD video CD with the National Geographic program. The certificate of authenticity is held in a plastic sheath for protection. It also has a pamplet about the set itself.
