ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR PRISONER LETTER
Labeled by its former owner as "Southern Prison Camp P.O.W. (letter) To Wife," this auction is for a Letter dated June 18, 1862, written by John Campbell to his Wife, Catherine Campbell, in Philadelphia. From our research we have learned that t were two POW deaths of persons named J. Campbell from Pennsylvania. One was "Campbell, J., Pvt - Company H, 143rd Regiment, PA, died 12-1-65." The other was "Campbell, John, Pvt - Company E, 11-7-64." We don't know, however, if either of those two men is the author of this letter. Unfortunately, we can't read most of the Postmark. The part that we can read says, "Old _____ _____ _____, VA." I believe this mark holds the clue to w John Campbell was at the time of this posting, so we really don't know if this is a POW Letter or not. Nonetheless, it IS an Old and Authentic letter, written "home" during the Civil War. Please scroll down to see our photos and perhaps you can decipher the Postmark. If you can shed some light on this Historical Document, your gentle guidance will be sincerely appreciated. The Period Envelope, measuring approximately 3 by 5 ½ inches, is WONDERFUL! My guess is that John brought along some stationery from home, and used it to write this letter. In the upper left hand corner, t is an illustration of a large eagle hoisting an American Flag from which a Banner unfurls that reads, "The Union & The Constitution." The Envelope is addressed: "For Catherine Campbell; in care of Thomas Frum, 762 Eleventh St, above Catherine St, Philadelphia, PA." The Letter is written on a folded sheet of paper that measures approximately 8 by 5 inches as folded, and reads, "6-18-62 - My Love, I received yours of the 30th. I feel thankful that you are all well. May the Lord bless in all. I have had no word from Hugh since I had it from your self. My health is weak as usual. Tell Jane to be a good girl. May the Lord be your portion. Pray for me. My Love, John Campbell." Both the Letter and its Envelope are in good condition, as shown. T is some wear, some staining, and some small tears to the open edge of the envelope, but quite frankly, they are in Amazing Condition when your take into account that they are paper that is about 145 years old. This Set has obviously been gently handled and stored with care. We GUARANTEE these Documents are Original and Authentic as described. Please check our feedback and rest assured that You Can Bid with Confidence!
