Postal History RARE 1862 Civil War - Confederate States of America 1862 cover here from the Seaboard Air Line Railway. This comes from a noted collection that just went on the auction block - and we are selling a few pieces over the next few months. This is franked with a CSA stamp (sorry, haven't researched which it is...) and was sent to Mr. D.H. Bryant in the care of Capt Robt. Harrison at Harts Road Statin, Fla R. Road, Baldwin, East Fla. This CSA cover is by far the most intriguing and valuable. An assumption (but a very sound assumption I believe) is made that the indistinct postmark is Wilkesboro, North Carolina - which would account for the writer's routing "via Savannah and Lake City Florida..." The railroad which would connect Lawton, Georgia on the Atlantic & Gulf Railroad was not completed although the grading was finished in late 1862. To complete this militarily strategic and important handler of desparately needed foodstuffs, the Confederates required much iron rail. The 155 mile Florida Railroad was one of two available sources. Jacksonville had just falled to the Federals and the extremities of the Florida RR at Fernandina and Cedar Keys were being torn up to prevent further incursion. It's believed that Mr. Bryant and Capt Harrison were members of the first commission designated to dicker with owner Senateor David L. Yulea. Although a stanch Southerner, he was quite fond of his little railroad and would not give up his rail easily. His long fight with Gov Milton began in earnest in May of 1863. By court skuldugery and outright "robbing" of the military, the last spike on the connecting line was finally hammered home in March 1865 - too late to do any good. Hart's Road Station may now be Yulee, Florida..... We'll ship the cover with the exhibit page - as you see on the bigger scan. Here's some info on this historic southern railroad - /wiki/Seaboard_Air_Line_Railroad Rare and unique find here. We paid a pretty penny for this, and starting at our usual LOW minimum bid.
