1862 THE FIRST U.S. $1. BILL- ONE DOLLAR Description:This is an example of the first $1. bill issued by the government as legal tender during the Civil War in 1862. Dated August 1st 1862, payable at the Treasury in New York. Series 249 numbered 1703 with red seal and intricate green designs. Image is of Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury under President Lincoln from 1861 to 1864 and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Chase was responsible for the motto- "In God We Trust" which was adopted for use on our coinage. This is a circulated bill with very light fold lines but no other detracting features that we can see. Since we have no expertise regarding condition, grading, etc. we ask that you examing the bill carefully and form your own opinion. We think it is in very good condition for its 150 years.
