Very interesting illustrated letterhead + matching postal cover, both with imprint of Putnam Brothers Stationery, contemporary 3c Washington postage stamp cancelled '"PAID", with Mar 31 (1862) Mount Vernon, Maine postmark to the left, and addressed to Howard M. Atkins, Jacksonville, Illinois. The letterhead bears a 4 pp. personal letter, written by George F. Atkins, a young student, to his brother, dated Mar 2 1862, containing the follow Civil War content, "I think the recent victories are owing to the Secretary of War [Edwin M. Stanton] ... True, the soldiers won them, but if the change in the Department had not taken place, I do not think the country would be rejoicing over the capture of Fort Donaldson [Louisiana] ... Our former school teacher hung himself a while ago. He was crazy a the time ... Mar 4th ... A year ago [Abraham] Lincoln was inaugurated President, and what a year it has been! War has broken out, armies have been raised, battles have been fought and victories gained on either side. A year ago I did not think that this would take place, and looking back, I can see that I know much more than I did then. Then I knew but little of Southern forts or Northern ones either, but little of Army officers or of the position of now important places.
