Giovanni Boschi (editor) Raimundo Petraroja (lithographer) Atlante Zoologico Popolare published 1863 - 1879 This over 145 year old original antique handcolored lithograph is taken from the 2nd volume of the first edition of Boschi's/Petraroja's extremely rare work "Atlante Zoologico Popolare, opera Compilata Sui Più Recenti Lavori di Zoologia Italiani e Stranieri". (Popular Zoological Atlas, a Work Compiled from the Most Recent Works of Italian and Foreign Zoology), The set was originally published in eight volumes: the 1st covering anatomy the 2nd volume covering primates and monkeys, the 3rd, mammals and cats, the 4th, marine mammals, echidnas and platypuses, the 5th and 6th, birds, the 7th, reptiles and fishes, and the 8th, insects, invertebrates, shells and mollusks. This work contains beautiful natural history lithographs of animals in their natural environment. The landscape settings are simple yet effective compositional devices but also convey general information about the creature's habitat.
