Printed Hand- Watercolored , Hand-written Christening Fraktur, dated May 24th, 1863. Publisher is Shafer & Koradi, S.W. 4th & Wood Streets, Philidelphia. Text in German. Child is Catherina, daughter of Johan Georg Weller and his wife Elisabetha, nee Brucker. The minister was P.S.Staiger, Mt. Pulaski, Illinois. Godparents/ witnesses(?) are Wilhelm Rupp and (?)Eliefrau & Christine Jager. Though it originated in Illinois, it is from a Dallas, Texas estate auction. Texas became home for many German immigrants in the 19th Century. Did Catherina marry a Texan? Condition: some moisture discoloration, as shown. Calligraphy, painting and printing have not been damaged by moisture other than darkening. There is one tiny hole in the paper in the upper left with a quarter-inch tear about one quarter inch from the edge of the frame. No other holes or tears. The document does not appear too have been folded, but rather rolled. it retains some slight ruffeling and an indication of irregular old creases that could have been made from being tied around the middle of the roll. The Fraktur is in an old ebonized document frame that shows age wear. Glass appears to be more modern. I have not opened the frame, but the brown paper backing has been opened on three sides and reattached at the top. This was probably done to replace the glass. The inner backing read more
