Outstanding Scarce Original CIVIL WAR UNION SOLDIERS HOLDING HANDS HALF-PLATE TINTYPE This fantastic, original ca. 1863-65 Civil War 1/2 plate tinted tintype depicts what appear to be two Union Privates holding hands and touching boots. The subjects are presumably brothers, if not genetically then perhaps "Brothers-in-Arms". I believe that the pair were with the 225th Co., which was consolidated into the 12th regiment in Albany NY in October 1863... this merely a best guess derived from the lightly scratched "225 NY 225" on the reverse, which is very light but large and fully legible, and obviously original to the piece. The soldier on the left appears to be in regulation uniform, the one on the right appears to be in "civies" but for the kepi. The cheeks of both soldiers are tinted in rose , and the buttons and kepi ornament of the private on the left are tinted in gold. The image is powerful and suggestive, depicting an overt affection rarely seen in military photographs of even much later periods... even among brothers. ~A superb image!~ Condition - The photographic quality is excellent, with crisp detail and clear focus on all but the most peripheral details... as is typical. The plate does have a slight vertical ridge at center from top to bottom as from a relatively "soft" bend at some time in the distant past, but as can be seen in the photos, the actual image is not affected but for the slightest scuff along the top "ridge" of this fold, for the greatest part at top center against the white background. Otherwise, t is a very faint silhouette around the edges from the original matte or frame, and light, scattered surface scratching and edge wear elsew... but certainly nothing glaring or distracting. A very solid example of a rare, "one-of-a-kind", original half-plate tintype!
