Up for auction is a vintage Civil War Era Soldier letter datelined Camp near Ba ir Creek, Mississippi, August 9, 1863.I am not sure if bair is actually Bear. Letter written by Corporal Benjamin Jirah Gates , Company I, 47th Illinois Volunteers. Letter written to his sister, Emily Ga tes, Pe oria, Illinois. Letter is mainly of a personal and what's going on around camp nature...Excerpts from the letter.......... "..............I sent a lot of Doctor's implements with Captain Andrews t o leave with John Bush for him to give to some of our folks. They are all very nice ones for they are secess h. take good care of them fo r they are very costly. Emily, if I was in your place, I would not write to Mr. G W. Hakes, as he takes the pains to show your letters to everybody that come handy, and that is not all. I have been told by the captain of his very own Company that he was in jail for stealing horses, but I don't know how that is, but one thing. I do know he is on extra duty nearly half of his time and is thought, but little of by his Com rads. he is not the man I took him to be..........so, Emily, I advise you as a brother not to have anything to do with him at all..............I wish you could see Lieutenant Wilkes, of Company H. He could tell you all about him. I sent my wat ch with him to Pe oria to get it fixed.............." Letter read more
