OFFERED HERE IS A VERY INTERESTING TRIO OF DOCUMENTS. THE FIRST IS A FORM 39 OFFICIAL DRAFT NOTICE DATED AUGUST 14, 1863 FROM THE PROVOST MARSHALL'S OFFICE, 1ST CONNECTICUT DISTRICT, TO E.P. HANKS NOTIFYING HIM THAT HE HAS BEEN DRAFTED INTO SERVICE FOR 3 YEARS. THE SECOND IS A FORM 31 CERTIFICATE OF NON-LIABILITY SHOWING THAT HE IS EXEMPT FROM SERVICE HAVING FURNISHED A SUBSTITUTE. THE THIRD IS A HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENT STATING THAT RECEIVED OF E.P. HANKS, $300. TO SIMEON GREGORY AGREEING TO FURNISH THE SAID HANKS WITH A SUBSTITUTE UNDER THE LAST DRAFT.
