We are very pleased to offer a very rare handwritten Civil War diary for the year 1863. The account was kept by a 20-year-old Union soldier named Denison Parker , serving in Company A 12th Regiment of the Vermont Volunteers . He was born in Cavendish, Vt., in the year 1843. He enlisted at age 18 on 8/19/62, and was serving at a camp in Union Mills, Virginia when the diary was written. The text includes daily activities; constant drilling/dress parades, marching, erecting picket stockades and "sutter shanties", digging rifle pits, etc. There are mentions of Manassas Junction, Rappahanock Bridge, Bristow Station, and other locations. Prisoners were arriving at the camp and dispatched to other locations, soldiers were buried... quite a bit was going on, and I assume Parker was involved in the action. Many names of people back in Vermont, Officers in the camp, and fellow soldiers are included, as well. In January, Parker became sick with measles, which weakened him quite a bit, even after recovery. He complains of a sore throat in May, and became very ill. He writes that doctors gave him medication that made him feel sleepy and sick, and fainted at roll call one morning. The diary continues until mid-June, but ends there. The interior of the back cover explains that "Denison Parker Died June 21st, 1863 in the Brigade Hospital at Union Mills, VA.". His grave in Cavendish, Vermont states that the cause was Typhoid Pneumonia. Very sad... as I understand, sickness took the lives of many Civil War soldiers. The diary holds the original pencil, and measures 4-3/4" by 3-1/2". Found at an estate in Southeastern Vermont, it's in very good, complete , condition, with surface wear/discoloration consistent with age. An authentic and outstanding Civil War artifact! The winning bidder pays shipping costs. Good luck, and thanks for looking! Due to eBay rules beyond our control, insurance is no longer optional and will be included on the invoice after the sale for items costing $50 or more.
