Botanicals - LOWE - NOTE: SIX PRINTS TOTAL (most of our listings are from mixed editions 1856 - 1872 - see descriptions below of BOTH the first edition 1856 - 59 and the later editions up to 1872) HOWEVER, this is an outstanding group of SIX (5-3/4" by 9-1/4") Woodsia, Aspidium, etc. all native to North America, and all from the 1863 edition and with a nearly even antique beige-white background. TITLES: Top Row, left to right: *Aspidium Angulare (Plate 24) - native of the United States, and others Woodsia Hyperborea - native of the Rocky Mountains of North America, the Mountains of Massachusetts at Saskatchewan, and others Aspidium Dilatum - native of the Rocky Mountains of Norht America, Canada, and others Bottom Row, left to right: Aspidium Cristatum - native of North America and others Polypodium Lycopodioides - native of the American Meridian, and others * Aspidium Angulare (Plate 23) - native of the United States and others Note: The Aspidium Angulare Plates 23 and 24 share a joint text section CONDITION: VERY GOOD, EXCEPT: there is light age toning at the margins, which can easily be matted out. The background colors of all six prints are a very even antique white. WITH ALL ORIGINAL TEXT and with a photocopy of the title page. A.Ferns: British and Exoticc. 1856 – 59 First Edition Size approx. 5-1/2 by 9" These prints of ferns from all over the world were selected from the first eight-volume edition (1856-60) of Edward Joseph Lowe's "Ferns: British and Exotic, published by Groombridge and Sons, London . It was another successful collaboration between artist A. F. Lydon and the renowned 19th century color printer Benjamin Fawcett (see also "A Natural History of the Nests and Eggs of British Birds with text by Rev. F. O. Morris, R. A.). The superb color wood block engravings are on heavy paper with the verso blank. Each measures approximately 5-1/2 by 9". One edge may be ragged where it was removed from the book, but this will not affect framing. The scientific Latin names of the particular plants are printed on the plate. A photocopy of the title page will be furnished with your purchase, and most plates have the original text available. Lowe also published other works, including "Beautiful Leaved Plants" (popularly referred to as "Lowe's Leaves") in 1861. A selection from this work will be made available on this website later this year. The Lowe's Ferns, the Lowe's Leaves, and the Anne Pratt Ferns are all of similar size and format and thus can be mixed and used together to make an attractive framed grouping.
