Very interesting Union Civil War private's soldier letter, written in pencil, on colorful patriotic letter sheet, dated Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, Oct 19 1863, from Charles C. Barnes of Company "G", 34th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, to his "folks". Reads, in part, as follows, "I am nearly all well. I am at my quarters, but not on duty yet ... I received my box [of delicacies] , but just in the wrong time. We had orders to pack up everything and be ready to evacuate the place at a moment's notice, so I got the box and opened it and had to give some of it to the boys, after I had got my haversack full. I got the chicken, all the apples and part of the cookies, the jelly and bread and butter. The rest I had to give away. The pies I saved, too. I must have another [box] this winter. I had such poor luck with this one. Yesterday was Sunday, but it did not seem much, for the regt. was out beyond Charleston [W] VA, fighting all day. I did not go. T was 3 men killed and 6 wounded. The color bearer was shot and killed instantly. His wife was I could hear the guns plain. They were 17 miles [away]. Drove the Rebs 10 miles and took a lot of prisoners. The Rebs took 300 of the 9th MD regt. From us t were 8 batteries and 2 regts. of infantry ... [signed] C. C. Barnes ..." Charles C. Barnes, a farmer from Westfield A, enlisted at age 18 on Jul 14 1862, as a private. He was mustered out on Jun 16 1865. After the Civil War he was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). At the time this letter was written, the 34th Massachusetts was part of the Union occupation force at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The battle referred to in the letter is no doubt the action which took place at Berryville on Oct 18, the day before Barnes wrote this letter. Our research file, including a brief regimental history, is included. Letter is in good condition, writing is a bit light, but readable. *************************************************We have been in the paper Americana business since 1953 and are members of both the Manuscript and Ephemera Societies as well as numerous other collector organizations.
