Up for auction is an original Civil War letter written by Union Soldier James Peters Elliott to his mother. He wrote this letter from "Near Petersburg, Va. At Battery No. 5". The letter is dated Sept. 23, 1864 . James Elliott was with the 1 st Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery Regiment at the time he wrote this letter. The 1 st Connecticut Heavy Artillery Regiment was one of the first regiments in the North to agree to a three year enlistment. James Peters Elliott and his brothers, George Frederick Elliott and Edward Augustus Elliott, all stepped forward and volunteered for service at the beginning of the Civil War. You could call James Elliott, the man who wrote this letter, a Civil War lifer, for he reenlisted at the end of his three years of service and stayed in service to his country until the end of the Civil War. His brother George served his three years and then left the army in 1864. George Elliott served along with his brother in the 1 st Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery Regiment. Brother Edward served in the 5 th Regiment of the Connecticut Infantry. Edward disappeared from his regiment in the summer of 1862. It is unclear whether he deserted or if he was captured by the Confederate forces and killed. Both James and George Elliott were writing letters home, in 1864 and 1865, stating that they did not know what had happened to their brother. This three page letter was written on one folded sheet of stationery that is 8" by 10" in size. The letter comes with a mailing envelope that was used to mail a James Elliott(Union Soldier) letter home, just not this this letter. I am including this envelope with this auction. The envelope was postmarked in Washington D.C. on Sept. 6, [1864]. I have not corrected the spelling in the letter below. He writes: Battery No. 5. Near Petersburg Sept. 23 rd 1864 Dear Mother Your kind favor came to hand yesterday and I take this opportunity to answer. I was very glad to hear from you once more. You said you supposed that I had heard most of the news in the letter that E. wrote, I suppose not for if she wrote, it failed to reach me-- Things have been quiet of late except when the news reached of Sheridans Victory all of our Batteries fired a salute of 30 guns all loaded with shot and shell-- I think that t will be a fight pretty soon-- I am glad that you went to camp meeting I was in hopes that you would see some of your sisters t, if I cannot see my friends for the present yet I want you at home to see them & I shall content myself to hear from them occasionally "until this cruel war is over", and then I expect to see them again and I presume if I am spared to return that they all will want to see me. I should have seen them last Spring if I had had time but 30 days was to short a time to chace all over Conn --I am glad that you saw Henry Gleason and family, I can think in my imagination how glad he was to see you after he had been out in the army so long. I presume he had something to say about me-- [ note written up the left margin of page three ] I will send you some flower seeds save them if you please. T was cheering all along our lines when the news came of Gen. Sheridans Victory up the Shenandoah Valley . The rebels lost 7 Generals, and about 6000 men about 2000 of them wounded prisoners-- Our army is being strongly reenforced and the probabilities are that in a very few days something will be done, our men are in the best of spirits and are making "preparations" to do something and I hope it will be the last battle of the war and I think that Gen. Lee will make a very desperate attempt to regain the reputation which the rebel armies have lost this summer but they will get beat. we must beat them cost what it may-- You remember I stopped with Mr. Strong two nights in Rockville , his son died at home a few day ago. I am well Love to you all ...
