Here is a simply beautiful and genuine Civil War era Confederate States of America $2 note, issued at Richmond, February 17, 1864. Features portrait of Confederate Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin at right. Back is blank as issued. Serial #31466. Beautiful pen signatures of Confederate officials A. Zealy, for Register and J. Ambler, for Treasurer. Benjamin was a prominent New Orleans lawyer who joined the Confederate cause and was chosen for this high post because of his intelligence and dependability. He was also the only Jewish member of the Confederate Cabinet, thus obtaining the moniker "the Confederate Jew." After the war, Benjamin escaped from Richmond to the Caribbean, and later lived in London. He never returned to the United States. The $1 and $2 notes of this series are very scarce as few were issued as they did not have much purchasing power. Seldom offered and in demand as collectors complete sets of 1864 notes .
