VERY RARE 1864 CONFEDERATE NAVY CIVIL WAR ALABAMA SUTTER COMMANDER SEMMES 1ST ED Description: From 1864, published during the Civil War, this is a very scarce first edition, The Cruise of the Alabama and the Sumter, from the Private Journals and other Papers of Commander R. Semmes, C.S.N. (Confederate States Navy), and other Officers. Published by Carleton, New York. Bound in the embossed brown cloth of the day, probably better condition than most copies, as this was not a strong binding. Sized 7 and a half by 5 inches, with a frontispiece print of Commander Semmes of the Confederate Navy. VERY uncommon. 328 pages. The Sumter and the Alabama were two Confederate States steamers. Memoirs by Confederates were rare DURING the war, and rare after it until much later. The victors write the histories. We note copies listed at over $400. Raphael Semmes (September 27, 1809 – August 30, 1877) was an officer in the United States Navy from 1826 - 1860 and the Confederate States Navy from 1860 - 1865. During the American Civil War he was captain of the famous commerce raider CSS Alabama, taking a record sixty-nine prizes. Late in the war he was promoted to rear admiral and also served briefly as a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army. Admiral/General Semmes is the only North American to have the distinction of holding both ranks
