You are bidding on an original bound copy of Harper's Weekly . This is Volume VIII for the year 1864. Inside you'll find 848 pages of information about every topic which interested intelligent and cultivated readers in 1864. Each issue contains news items as well as tales, poems and essays by the ablest American and European writers. Of course, public thought in 1864 was centered on the events of the Civil War and you'll find fantastic coverage of the battles, skirmishes, personalities, and politics of the War Between the States. Each issue provides brief coverage of Senate and House actions, the military situation, foreign news, and Army and Navy items. More comprehensive coverage is provided for many of the war events and a variety of other topics, including the 1864 Presidential campaign and the Metropolitan Fair in New York City. Illustrations were an important part of the Weekly's content, and it developed a reputation for employing some of the most renowned illustrators, notably Winslow Homer and Livingston Hopkins. In this volume, five-hundred illustrations provide views of the events and scenes of the war. These include 100 portraits of soldiers and statesmen. Also of interest to the Civil War buff are the maps of military operations and drawings of military equipment, badges, and other items. Each issue also contains many advertisements for vintage businesses and products. This is a fantastic piece of history! The 52 issues of this volume begin with January 2, 1864 and run through December 31, 1864. A general index and list of illustrations are provided at the beginning of the volume. The original covers have been lost; however, new covers have been attached to protect the issues. The pages show some soil and dirt and although many show chips and tears, the large majority of these are minor. The title page and index have large tears and are tape-repaired; t are also library markings on the title page. The five January issues show heavier damage than the later issues. Several of the pages have come loose from the binding; page 801-802 is missing. The lower right corners of 10%-15% of the pages have become folded through use and consequently have come loose from the pages. Many of these corners are still present in the fold. Any fold or tear is very brittle and should be handled with care. Otherwise, the reader can easily browse through the pages without causing damage. If you have any questions, please e-mail them to me.
