Pacific Shore Maps presents for auction 1864 Johnson's Japan, Nippon, Kiusiu, Sikok Yesso..." This is an original ex-atlas map from an 1864 Johnson & Ward atlas. It is fully hand-colored and has a decorative border, the "banknote" style. It is 13 x 16 and in VG condition, narrow upper border. Nicely executed map of Japan and the Kuriles reflecting the recent exploration by a variety of parties, not the least of which were the US Exploring Expedition and Commodore Perry . Attractive full color inset maps of Yesso ( Hokaido) and the Bay of Nagasaki ( the latter well-known as the west's window and door into Japan). The image of the area around Yedo (Tokyo) is typical of the detail found on this map.
