Webster's Army & NavyPocket DictionaryRevised Edition- 1864 Scarce Civil War Item This is a rare find and a truly unique Civil War collectible for any afficionado, as acquired from a large collection we are currently offering over the next few weeks. What we offer is an 1864-dated pocket "Army And Navy Pocket Dictionary" by William G. Webster. This is a particularly interesting item, the first of its type that we have encountered. Inside its pages are definitions of words and terms used by the military at the time of the Civil War, which was still raging at the time this was published. T are also illustrations of things like rank insignia, etc...useful tidbits for any soldier or sailor who sought the meaning of certain terms and phrases or who was composing a military dispatch, official correspondence, etc. ...and in the hands of a civilian it would be of immense help in translating such things as battle accounts, etc. Next to the title page t is a nice color frontspiece featuring flags of 18 different nations. The book itself is in good overall condition, with the outer leather flap still attached. The leather binding has a nice vintage wear pattern consistent with something that was often carried and used. Outside of some normal chipping at the edges and a small tear near the flap, the only significant outer wear is at the spine, w t is a separation at the right hand edge. The pages at that area are all still together but separated away from the spine a bit. See pics. Otherwise the leather is still flexible and the gilt edges of the pages are still bright.
