Up for auction is a vintage Civil War Era letter and cover mailed from New Bern, North Carolina. Letter is addressed to Charles Squire, South Monson, MA. Cover has had stamp removed, has a readable double circle postmark, was opened at right and has other wear. Text of letter uses 2 pages of the 4 page stationery piece. Second sheet has been reduced by 1/3. Letter has staining and age yellowing. Letter dated Feb. 12, 1865. Letter was from Elbridge Pond. Excerpts from the letter: "..........t is car load after car load coming into New Bern. Perhaps you once knew a fellow by the name of W.L. Church, who is a first rate fellow and stops in the woods with me. He is about 19 years old.....I caught a fox last night in a log trap. He had first rate fur and will fetch $1.50 in New Berne.....t is no partridges in this state. The natives call the quail partridge. ........the rifles that we have we could not hit a ?? 40 foot bacon. They are Enfield guns condensed at that. I had as lief (?) any body would aim at me as to aim a foot the other side of me................ Letter relatively easy to read, but has it's moments.
