Rare and simply FANTASTIC, original, 1865, six page, manuscript Civil War Cavalry Soldier's letter with the entire content detailing the actions of the 1st New Hampshire Cavalry at the Battle of Waynesboro alongside forces commanded by General George Armstrong Custer and detailing harassment by guerrilla's under the command of Custer's West Point Roomate, Confederate General Thomas Rosser!! This very fantastic, Battle Content Civil War letter was written from Winchester, Virginia and dated March 14th, 1865. It was written by Sergeant Henry Field of Company A, 1st New Hampshire Cavalry to his Sister. The Letter begins "My Dear Sister, / I sent you a letter two weeks ago last Sunday, the day before we started on Sheridan's Raid and I will give you a little history of it as far as we went.". From that first sentence to the final paragraph, the letter is entirely dedicated to a retelling of the movements of General George Armstrong Custer's 2nd Brigade leading up to, during and after the Battle of Waynesboro. That 2nd Brigade (of 3 under Custer's command) consisted of the 8th, 15th, and 22d New York regiments, along with a squadron of the 3d Indiana, and a detachment of the 1st New Hampshire which included Company A and Sergeant Henry Field.
